On Wednesday afternoon, Meta informed users that it was close to resolving a significant technical issue that had caused an outage across several of its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Many people found themselves unable to access their accounts or use the services, leaving social media enthusiasts and business users alike feeling frustrated.

As the outage unfolded, users flooded platforms like X and Downdetector to report the issue. By mid-afternoon, Instagram alone had received nearly 70,000 outage reports. Facebook saw even higher numbers, with over 105,000 reports of disruptions, while WhatsApp also saw significant issues, with roughly 12,500 reports logged.
While Meta acknowledged the outage was affecting a large portion of its user base, the company reassured users that they were working quickly to restore service. By around 5:30 PM EST, Meta shared that they were “99% of the way there” to fully resolving the issue.
Though the situation was frustrating for many, it was not as impactful as some previous global tech outages. For example, in November 2024, Microsoft faced a massive outage that disrupted services like Outlook and Teams for office workers worldwide. Earlier this year, the largest IT outage in history, caused by a software issue at CrowdStrike, halted air travel, affected hospitals, and resulted in billions in losses for major companies.
Despite the frustration, Meta’s platforms—Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—continue to be some of the most widely used in the world. In fact, Meta reported almost 4 billion monthly active users across its family of services in 2023, making its apps an essential part of daily life for millions of people.
